What to Expect on Your First Visit to UPTOWN Barbers

Your First Visit, Step by Step
Walking into a new barbershop for the first time can feel uncertain. You do not know the team, you are not sure how things work, and you are trusting someone new with your appearance. At UPTOWN Barbers, we understand that, and we have built our entire experience around making every client feel welcome and confident from the moment they step through the door.
Here is exactly what to expect on your first visit.
Arriving and Greeting
Booked ahead through our online booking system or walking in? Either way, you will be greeted as soon as you arrive. Our shops have a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere. There is no pretension, no exclusivity. You will feel comfortable immediately.
If there is a short wait, you will be offered a seat and given an estimated time. Walk in waits vary depending on the day and time, but booking ahead guarantees your spot.
We have three Sydney CBD locations to choose from: The Rocks on George Street, St James Arcade on Elizabeth Street, and the Dymocks Building on George Street. Pick whichever is most convenient for you.
The Consultation
This is where the real experience begins. Before any clippers or scissors touch your hair, your barber will have a conversation with you. This is not a rushed formality. It is a genuine discussion about what you want.
Your barber will ask about your preferred style, how much length you want to keep, if you want a fade and what type, and how much time you spend styling each morning. If you have reference photos on your phone, this is the perfect time to share them.
For first time clients, the consultation is especially important because your barber is learning your hair for the first time. They will assess your hair type, thickness, growth patterns, and any cowlicks or quirks that need to be worked with rather than against. This understanding is what separates a good haircut from a great one.
If you are unsure what you want, that is perfectly fine. Our barbers are experienced enough to suggest styles based on your face shape, hair type, and lifestyle. Just be honest about your preferences and they will guide you.
The Haircut
Once you and your barber are aligned on the style, the cut begins. Depending on what you have asked for, this typically takes 25 to 40 minutes. Our barbers work with precision and care, taking their time to ensure every detail is right.
Throughout the cut, your barber will check in with you. They will show you the progress, confirm the length and fade are looking right, and make adjustments as needed. This collaborative approach ensures you are never surprised by the final result.
Our team is skilled across the full range of services, from precision skin fades and textured crops to classic scissor cuts and beard shaping. Whatever you have asked for, you are in experienced hands.
The Hot Towel Treatment
Once the cutting is complete, many of our services include a hot towel treatment. A warm, steamed towel is applied to your face and neck, opening pores and softening the skin. It is one of those small touches that elevates a haircut from routine to ritual.
The hot towel also serves a practical purpose. It soothes any irritation from clipper work around the neckline and leaves you feeling refreshed and relaxed.
Styling and Finishing
After the hot towel, your barber will style your hair using products suited to your cut and hair type. This is also an educational moment. They will show you how much product to use, how to apply it, and how to recreate the look at home each morning.
Barber tip: Ask your barber to show you how much product they are using. Most blokes use way too much at home. A 10 cent piece of clay is usually all you need.
Pay attention during this step. Your barber's styling technique is tailored to your specific haircut, and replicating it at home is easier than you might think when you know the right method.
The Final Check
Before you leave the chair, your barber will hand you a mirror to check the back and sides. This is your opportunity to request any final adjustments. If something is not quite right, speak up. Our barbers want you to leave completely satisfied, and minor tweaks at this stage are simple to make.
Booking Your Next Visit
Before you head out, consider booking your next appointment. Your barber will recommend the ideal timeframe based on your style. For fades, that is typically every two weeks. For longer styles, every three to four weeks.
Booking before you leave is the easiest way to stay consistent with your grooming. You can also book anytime through our online system.
Why the First Visit Matters
Your first visit sets the foundation for an ongoing relationship with your barber. The better your barber understands your hair and preferences from the start, the better every subsequent visit will be. At UPTOWN Barbers, we value that relationship and work to earn your trust from the very first cut.
